Home Escape Plan

Ever wonder what you would do if your smoke detector went off in the the middle of the night? You need to develop a plan with your family and practice it. Draw a floor plan of your home. Identify two way out of every room. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household. Pick a meeting place outside in front of your home. Sleep with doors closed. Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Pretend that some escape routes are blocked by smoke or fire and practice using alternative exits.

If the smoke alarm goes off, roll out of bed and crawl to the door. Feel the door with the back of your hand. If the door feels cool, open the door slowly. If you do not see fire or smoke, close the door behind you and proceed outside to the family meeting place. Remember, if you have to escape through smoke, CRAWL LOW AND GO. If the door feels hot, turn on the light, keep the door closed and go to the window. If you are able to exit safely through the window, do so. If the window is too high to exit safely, open the window and holler for help. You should consider buying a fire escape ladder.

Once you are outside, go to a family meeting place. Do not go back inside for any reason. Use the neighbor's phone to call 911.

Draw up an escape plan for your family, make sure to have at least two exits out of every room. Discuss the escape routes with everyone in your family. Pick a meeting place outside in front of your home.
